New Orleans is a major port in United States and the largest metro city in the state of Louisiana with an estimated population of about 1,235,650 residents. The city is situated in the southeastern Louisiana on both sides of the Mississippi River. The city derives its name from the Regent of France, Philippe d' Orléans, Duke of Orléans. Apart from its cuisine, music, being the birthplace of Jazz and the festivals and celebration like the Mardi Gras, New Orleans is famous for its characteristic French architecture, the cross culture and its multilingual heritage. It is often called the most unique city in America.
New Orleans was founded on May 7, 1718. It was an important port during the American Revolutionary War. The port was used to smuggle out help and support to the rebels, transporting military tools and equipments and provisions up the Mississippi River. United State bought the land from Napoleon in 1803, following with the city witnessed rapid development with the arrival of Americans, French, Creoles, Irish, Germans and Africans in the area. Sugar and cotton were the major commodity crops grown on large cultivated areas just outside of the city.
Today’s modern day New Orleans is a mad riot of colors and cultures offering its visitors and residents a wide variety of entertainment and recreational activities for all ages. The city hosts major cultural events, Mardi Gras being one of the most popular events. It is a carnival celebration famous throughout the world. The Mardi Gras parade attracts thousands of visitors each year. The carnival season marks the beginning of the preparation for the Christian Lent season. The event includes parades, balls and the king cakes parties. The city also showcases a great nightlife with some of the best restaurants, cafés, bars and sports clubs in the area. New Orleans is one of the top ten most visited places in the United States.
